Heavy Rain Alert

HEAVY RAIN ALERT NUMBER FOUR

Heavy Rain ALERT Number Four issued by the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service at 7:00pm this evening on Wednesday 28th June 2017. 
A Heavy Rain Alert is currently enforced for Choiseul, Isabel, Western, Malaita, Temotu and Guadalcanal Provinces.
Situation: A trough lies northeast of Solomon Islands whist the general easterly trade wind flow persists over the Islands.    
Associated Clouds and Heavy Rain are expected to affect the Solomon Islands within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Such localised Heavy Rain may lead to flash flooding over communities living close to large rivers, streams and low lying areas.
Next update will be issued at 07:00am tomorrow morning.

WHAT IS A HEAVY RAIN ALERT?

When expected heavy rain has the potential to produce 50 – 100mm within next  48 -72 hrs(2-3 days) and that this heavy rain is likely to continue for several hours.

HEAVY RAIN CAN CAUSE FLOODING !!!

Floods can serously affect transport line with airports closed,roads submerged and bridges washed away.Landslide is possible.Animals and crops get drowned and washed away and sometimes soil is saturated for months afterwards,preventing new planting.
